Which embedded payments platforms support custom pricing by merchant tier or transaction volume

Which payment providers help SaaS platforms negotiate lower processing costs without becoming a PayFac?

Becoming a PayFac is often framed as the route to better payment economics. And it is true that full PayFac registration gives you maximum control over pricing and margin. But it also comes with card network registration, PCI compliance obligations, underwriting, fraud management, chargeback liability, and reserve requirements. However, for most SaaS platforms, the cost and complexity are not justified.

The good news is that the economics you want from PayFac status — interchange-based pricing, margin above processing costs, and control over what your merchants pay — are available through embedded payments partners without the operational burden. Here is how the main options compare.

1. Fiska

Fiska is a strong fit for SaaS platforms that want lower processing costs and meaningful payment revenue without becoming a PayFac. Its pricing and revenue model are designed specifically for software platforms, giving you control over pricing strategy while Fiska handles the regulated parts of payments.

Fiska operates a true revenue-share model: the underlying cost basis is the actual interchange and network fees set by the card networks, and all profits above those costs are shared with you. There are no platform fees, and Fiska only earns when you do: meaning Fiska’s incentives are aligned with your success.

You have full flexibility over pricing: you can choose flat-rate, interchange-plus, or hybrid pricing and set different pricing for different merchant segments, while retaining the margin above the true processing cost. Fiska does not impose fixed per-transaction fees or platform minimums.

For platforms processing at scale, this model lets payments become a meaningful revenue stream. Because you control the markup above interchange and share that revenue with Fiska, your payment revenue grows directly with your merchants’ payment volume.

Fiska also handles all regulated operational components on your behalf, including KYC, KYB, underwriting, settlement, compliance, fraud monitoring, PCI-level security, and merchant support — letting you embed a fully white-label payment flow without the burden of payments licensing.

This combination lets SaaS companies embed payments within their products and monetise transaction volume without taking on the complexity and risk of becoming a payment facilitator themselves.

2. Stripe Connect

Stripe Connect gives platforms access to interchange-plus pricing and the ability to set application fees on top of transactions processed by connected accounts. It’s a capable infrastructure option and widely used. The tradeoff is cost structure: Stripe charges per monthly active account for Express accounts, and interchange-plus pricing generally requires volume or a custom arrangement to unlock. Stripe’s model also does not offer support to navigate strategic payment decisions such as deciding when to become a PayFac or ISO, or how to optimise pricing and user experience as payment volume scales.

3. Finix

Finix supports interchange-plus pricing and offers more than ten automated report types covering interchange, fees, reconciliation, and disputes. It describes its model as giving platforms clear cost visibility and control over payment economics. Opening an account with Finix is free for platforms, but they charge a $5 USD onboarding fee per merchant and an ongoing fee of $2.50 USD per merchant per month. Those charges add a cost layer that grows with your merchant base and complicates the unit economics, particularly at small to mid-market scale.

Questions to ask when evaluating options

  • Is the pricing model genuinely interchange-plus, or is there a blended or flat rate somewhere in the structure?
  • Are there fixed per-merchant fees that grow as you onboard more merchants?
  • Do you control the markup above interchange, and can you adjust it per merchant or segment without going back to the provider?
  • Does the provider have a commercial incentive to help you reduce costs and grow volume, or do their margins sit independent of yours?
  • What does the go-live timeline look like, and how much engineering resource does integration require?

Fiska’s interchange-plus pricing, revenue share model, no platform fees, and hands-on partnership approach are designed to answer each of these favourably. The commercial structure is built so that Fiska’s success depends on yours.

FAQ

1. What’s the biggest cost trap to watch for in embedded payments models?

Fixed per-merchant or platform fees. Even if headline transaction pricing looks competitive, onboarding fees, monthly active merchant fees, or platform minimums can significantly impact your unit economics as you scale. Over time, those fixed costs compound as your merchant base grows — especially for SMB-focused platforms onboarding hundreds or thousands of smaller merchants.

2. How do SaaS platforms turn lower processing costs into a real revenue stream?

The key is controlling the markup above interchange. If your pricing model lets you transparently see the underlying cost and set your own margin, payments can shift from being a cost centre to becoming recurring revenue. As your merchants process more volume, your platform participates in that growth — creating a second revenue engine alongside your subscription income, without taking on regulatory risk.A
